Yeni Kuti, first child of legendary afrobeat maestro Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s and wife of late Femi Segun, married off her daughter Rolari to Australian Benedict Jacka at the African Shrine in Lagos.
While alive, Fela held big time show-stoppers at the Afrika Shrine, which was pulled down. But since his demise, his first son, Femi – also a world renown afrobeat maestro in his father’s stead, had built a brand new concert venue named African Shrine.
The gorgeous bride Rolari is a graduate of Leeds University UK and her father, Femi Segun, was a PR and showbiz impresario, and former broadcaster. He died in a power bike crash in 2013.
However, it was a fun-filled day the Kuti family and their friends gathered in the shrine to celebrate with Rolari and Benedict.
Former Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola (who should have been classmates with the bride’s uncle, Femi Kuti, had they met in Igbobi College) was at the star-studded wedding, and so was fuji king, Wasiu Ayinde Marshall.
It couldn’t have been a church wedding anyway, but it was rich in the colours and flavours of African tradition. Jakta proudly prostrated for the Kutis and Seguns to ask for the hand of Rolari in marriage, and he had his parents in tow.
Mother of the day Yeni was a peacock of sorts that day. Her bevy of afrobeat dancers were all decked up in colourful ethnic gowns, singing and twiddling ‘sekere.’ It was nice to see Rolari’s graying uncle, Femi Kuti very happy and taking wedding photos on his iPad.
