Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode on Friday August 21 at the 10th nutrition seminar of FrieslandCampina WAMCO in Lagos, highlighted the need for mothers and health practitioners in the country to place a premium on child nutrition as it impacts every child’s growth and brain development. She declared the seminar open as special guest of honour. Below is her address…
Over the years, Friesland-Campina WAMCO has proven itself to be a proactive company of integrity, professionalism with internationally acclaimed brands, namely: Peak, Three Crowns and Friso. So today, I am particularly glad that they have brought to the forefront a critical issue of our time – the challenge of physical growth and brain development of the Nigerian child.
Certainly, the brain development and mental health of a child is essential and it should never be neglected. The positive dimension of mental health is emphasized in the definition of health by the World Health Organisation as contained in its constitution: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
This brings to our attention the importance of both physical growth and mental health before referring to a child as healthy. Science reveals that there is no other period of a child’s life when nutrition has such profound impact as compared to the first five years of a child’s life. This is a critical period that sets the stage for a child’s intellectual development and lifelong health; a period of enormous potential, as well as vulnerability.
Currently, we see a gap in this issue, with our mothers not sure of what nutrition to give to their children or even completely unaware of this significant period of their children’s lives. In view of this, there is a need to come together, share our lessons and draw a road map on how to further proffer solution on this issue. There is a need for new dialogue, new strategies and new perspectives alongside the improvement and sharing of our current knowledge.
I am confident that health care practitioners will take the opportunity provided by this seminar seriously and contribute to the nutritional development of the Nigerian child. It is my hope that you will play a significant role in educating mothers on the need for proper nutrition for the child’s optimum development.
I commend the management of Friesland-Campina WAMCO Nigeria PLC for their efforts and enjoin everyone of us to remain good citizens of Lagos State and Nigeria. On this note, it is my pleasure to declare the 10th Nutrition Seminar of Friesland-Campina WAMCO Nigeria open.
Thank you and God bless everyone.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
